Djed Spence and Luka Modrić
One shirt, two eras. Tottenham Hotspur is the only club both records carry: for Modrić it sits between Dinamo and Real Madrid; for Spence it is the current club he reached via Middlesbrough, Rennes, Leeds and Genoa. Modrić, born 1985, plays in midfield; Spence, born 2000, is a defender capped by England.
How they met
They did not overlap: fifteen years between them and completely different phases of a career. By the time Spence was starting out on loans, Modrić was a Real Madrid player and a Ballon d'Or winner. What links them is the club, not the dressing room.
The core tension
Tottenham means two different things here. For Modrić it was a step: the club you leave for Real Madrid, a Ballon d'Or and a FIFA world-player award. For Spence it is the point he returns to between loans, having collected five clubs before thirty. The same address means opposite things to them.
